' To understand why we do things you have to consider the motivational forces acting at the time; plans and beliefs about what we should do may compete with what we want to do and impulses resulting from thoughts, feelings and external stimuli that are present. If we fail to consider all of these elements we will not even improve on implicit common sense.'

'Everything we think, do or feel is a reaction to something that is either in our heads or in our immediate environment. Our mental representations of ourselves and what we want to be (identity) comprise the foundation of self-control in the face of immediate impulses, wants and needs'

  WHAT IS THE PRIME THEORY

The acronym stands for Plans, Responses, Impulses, Motives and Evaluations.

It is an attempt at a synthetic theory of motivation that brings into the same model such diverse concepts as habit, choice, impulse, drive, emotion, reflex, self-control and identity.

These can play a role in influencing behaviour and must be incorporated into a theory that attempts to explain, predict and influence behaviour at least as well as can be done through implicit common sense.

The language and concepts are as close to those in everyday use as possible. Why invent a whole new vocabulary if what we have got served the purpose?
